College Scholarship Advice for Latino Students
Applying for college can be very stressful for students, especially when thinking about the cost of attending college. Many students feel that they cannot afford college, which is often a common issue in the Latino community. High school students search the internet for potential scholarships as they plan for college, but some may feel that they don’t have enough help or that they don’t have the right help for them. This is why families and students should search for programs in their local high school or community that can help them prepare for college, and people definitely need to be timely about applying to scholarships. Obviously the big national scholarships are going to be the ones that most people apply for. And so they’re going to be the hardest ones to get. The best shot they have is to get a scholarship at the school they’re going to go to. And that’s one of the advantages we have in our scholarship database, is we have a lot of school sponsored scholarships. There are monetary awards for first-generation Latinos, undocumented and international students, as well as Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals recipients. Scholarship finders such as Wells Fargo’s and Sallie Mae’s scholarship finder can help students find scholarships that they qualify for. Another great resource is the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, which provides resources to families and an online application for scholarships. Instead of just applying to the more well-known national scholarships like the Coca-Cola Scholar Foundation or the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, students should be applying to more local scholarships to improve their chances of receiving funds. Again, being timely is important when applying to scholarships and it is also important to remain calm to avoid being flustered by the application process for scholarships.
